Understanding cPanel Backup Filenames and .tar.gz Archives Print

cPanel commonly stores full account backups as compressed tar archives that use the .tar.gz extension. Manually generated backup filenames often include a date, and server-level archives can use the cPanel username as part of the filename.

A .tar.gz file is an archive, not a normal website file that should be uploaded into public_html. To recover individual data from it, extract the archive first and locate the appropriate content.

Keep the original archive unchanged while performing a manual recovery so you can return to the untouched backup if you select the wrong file during extraction.
