How to Change a Domain’s Nameservers Print

Authoritative nameservers are normally changed at the domain registrar, not in cPanel Zone Editor.

  1. Identify the domain registrar.
  2. Determine the exact authoritative nameserver hostnames the domain should use.
  3. Sign in to the registrar's domain-management interface.
  4. Replace the current nameservers with the new nameserver set.
  5. Save the change and allow DNS delegation caches to update.

Do not delete the old DNS zone immediately during a migration. Keep the old DNS serving consistent records until the delegation change has had time to spread.

If DNSSEC is active, handle DS records as part of the migration plan; a stale DS record can break resolution even when the nameservers themselves are correct.
