Clearing WordPress After It Is Stuck in Maintenance Mode Print

During an update, WordPress creates a .maintenance file in the WordPress root directory. If an update is interrupted, the file can remain and visitors may continue to see the scheduled-maintenance message.

  1. Confirm no WordPress update is still running.
  2. Open the WordPress root directory in File Manager and enable hidden-file display.
  3. Locate and remove the .maintenance file.
  4. Reload the site and WordPress admin area.
  5. Review the failed update and complete or retry it only after confirming file permissions and available disk space.

Removing .maintenance clears the maintenance flag; it does not repair an incomplete WordPress update by itself.
